Causes of Cat Dandruff

Dandruff is itchy and messy and you want to do what you can to keep your cat from getting it. Let us talk about what causes this condition so we can prevent it from occurring.

Diet

Many cats who have dandruff often have very little or no Omega 3 Fatty Acids in their food. This important substance is responsible for keeping moisture in the cat’s skin and if your cat only has an insufficient amount of it in the body, this will most likely result to dandruff.

Dry cat food is also one of the factors in his diet that brings about dandruff and flaky skin. Naturally, if all your cat gets is dry meals, then his body will also not have enough moisture since they do not really drink sufficient liquids to make up for it.

Environmental Factors

The climate surrounding him is another factor that can bring about cat dandruff. If he is constantly exposed to the sun with very low humidity and his skin gets burnt, it is going to flake out and result to dandruff. Additionally, if you keep on bathing your pet, his skin becomes dry and this could result to dandruff.

There are also cats that have allergic reactions to certain things such as dirt, dust, medication, and other irritants and this could be another cause.

Health

Cats are generally healthy if you simply take good care of them. They do not require much attention and can survive as long as there is food and water available. However, some cats can become ill and such health conditions can bring about certain symptoms such as dandruff. Among the illnesses that cause cat dandruff is Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Veterinary studies show that one out of 200 DM-afflicted cats has dandruff, and although not a common occurrence, it certainly cannot be ruled out.

These are but the main causes of cat dandruff. There are others not mentioned here because those are not at all common. Now that you are educated on the factors that can bring about dandruff, you can already do what you can to prevent your cat from getting it.
