Overview of Cat Dandruff

Do you have pet cats at home? How do you usually groom them? Do you bring your cat to a pet grooming shop or do the cleaning all by yourself? If you may not know it, cats usually just keep themselves clean without you having to bathe them. However, grooming your pet cat is one of the ways of caring for them.

This is also very important for your pet so as not to attract illnesses and viruses in the household especially that we love to cuddle with these felines. One of the ways to do this is to regularly check their fur and paws. What happens if cats are left unattended? You may not believe it but they also develop cat dandruff just like we humans do.

Cat dandruff is a skin condition or a skin problem characterized by dry, itchy, and flaky skin. This is unknowingly common to most cats. Dandruff appears like white form of specks on the skin causing it to be dry and itchy. The lack of omega 3 fatty acid in their diet can lead to this poor health state. Also, dandruff develops if the cat looses skin moisture and natural oil. Cat owners must know that this is a serious and an alarming cat health condition which needs critical medical attention.

There are three major factors of cat dandruff. Cats may be infected with parasites leading to the flakiness of the skin. During a hot summer, overexposure to the heat may result to the cat’s dry skin. It is also during hot weather conditions when the pests attack your pet. Obesity is also another factor causing dandruff in cats. The dry, flaky skin is evident in the base of the tail or in the lower back because overweight cats find it hard to reach these areas when they clean their furs.

The third contributing factor to this health condition is the use of cat dandruff shampoo. Cats produce natural oils in their skin which, when bathed too often, is removed causing the dryness of their skin. If the cat’s fur and skin is not rinsed well, the small amount of shampoo that is left on their skin forms into white specks of dandruff.

Your pet cat may be a favorite huggable companion and playmate of your kids. But make sure your pet is not causing the weak and poor health conditions of the family members. In taking care of everyone’s health, include your pet cat, too.
